Triphala for weightlossWeight loss can be a tough, and daunting task. With so many weight loss programs, it’s hard to choose the best option. Although losing weight can be beneficial to your health, you need to approach weight loss in the most effective manner. When I say effective, I do not mean how many pounds you can lose in a week. I am referring to how effective your weight loss is on your overall health. It is important to not starve yourself, or take harsh weight loss medications. It’s not always about how many calories you consume. You need to focus on what you’re consuming. One option? A healthy diet backed by triphala.

What is Triphala?

If you have not heard of triphala, you’re not the only one. Triphala is an ayurvedic herb prepared from three dried fruits; amalaki (increases lean body mass, and keeps your blood sugar more balanced), bibhitaki (reducing the accumulation of fat), and haritaki (removes toxins for the colon). It is known to be highly effective in terms of your digestive system. It helps to flush out toxic compounds, as well as stubborn waste. Not only does it help to flush your system, it nourishes your gastrointestinal tract. This helps to rejuvenate, increasing your overall well-being. It is thought to purify blood, while cleansing the liver and kidneys but unless you have issues with your liver and kidneys they are probably doing a perfectly wonderful job of cleansing on their own.

Triphala for Weight Loss

Triphala can have an instant weight loss effect due to excess waste being cleared from your body. When your digestive system is working more effectively, you can absorb nutrients easier. When you are absorbing more nutrients, you are less likely to feel the affects of hunger. Have you ever noticed how sometimes you are hungrier when you just give into your cravings of sugar and salty processed treats? A diet low in nutrients will actually trigger your body’s hungry alarm to try to get all the nutrients you need. (Dillian, 2013)

In addition to reducing hunger, triphala contains gallic acid. This is a strong antioxidant that has been shown to boost energy levels. If you are more energetic, you are more prone to become active. Triphala users reported higher energy levels after just five to seven days of regular use. (Binnendyk, 2013)

Does Triphala Work?

Triphala alone is not enough to help you loss weight. Triphala may increase results gained from reduced caloric intake, exercise, and a diet rich in veggies.

There have been cases where women have lost 20-40 pounds in a couple months but just because it worked for your Aunt Bertha doesn’t mean it will work for you. Aunt Bertha may have failed to tell you that she stopped drinking sweet tea or that she has taken up mountain climbing. However, when people are highly overweight, their bowels and liver tend to be congested. Triphala appears to be effective in jumpstarting proper digestion for people moving toward a healthy lifestyle.

Triphala allows your body to digest the nutrients it craves, so it’s up to you to provide the proper nutrients needed. If you take triphala but continue to eat processed food everyday, you may struggle with results. Although some women have seen results without modifying their diet, it’s important to take all the necessary steps. Eating properly will not only help you lose weight, it will improve your overall health and energy levels.

Dr. Nimisha Solomen works at the Amala Institute of Medical Sciences. She recommends taking triphala anywhere between five, to ninety days. The longer you use triphala, the higher the health benefits are. She recommends decreasing the dose if you take triphala for an extended period of time. She suggests taking between ½ a teaspoon and a full teaspoon, then mixing it with water. This amount is suggested for the first few days. You should gradually decrease your dosage to ¼ of a teaspoon after several months. In powder form, do not exceed 3-5 grams. If you are consuming capsules, do not exceed 5-6 per day.

Alternative to Triphala

If you are not fond of triphala to combat your weight issues, why not try some other elements with Ayurveda practices like homemade curry powder? Homemade curry powder can be added to aid in your weight loss efforts.

A typical Western diet focuses on foods that are sour, sweet, and salty but it is said that we need to consume three other tastes to aid in weight loss. These three tastes are bitter, pungent, and astringent. It’s important to consume a balance of all six tastes. This will make you feel full, satisfied, and help you digest food.

By adding homemade curry powder to each meal, you will satisfy all six tastes. Grind together coriander seeds, Fenugreek seeds, a Bay leaf, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, a cinnamon stick, cloves, and then add Turmeric powder. Use this blend to season your food. It is highly beneficial for your health, and for weight loss efforts.
