Tea is the New Coffee

teaThe cold weather is passing but we can still talk about hot tea. In fact, I’m drinking a cup of tea right now as I write this and all I can think about is sharing with others why I drink both yummy and tasteless teas. Of course the reason being that tea is powerful.

Tea is usually associated with China. According to a legend as told by a great website (I know you’ve read it in your narrator voice), the creation of what we now call tea dates back to 2737 BC, when a Chinese emperor’s servant was boiling water outdoors. According to the legend, the wind blew a few leaves right into the boiling water. The Emperor Shen Nung, well-known for being an herbalist, decided to take a sip of this accidental infusion. The leaves, they said, came from Camelia Sinensis. And that is how tea was created. Well, we do not know whether this story is true or not. What we do know is that tea existed for a very long time, and it has always been regarded as a healthy drink. So let’s find out what health benefits does tea offer.

Health Benefits of Tea

First and foremost, tea contains antioxidants. The tea we are referring to is the kind of tea that came from Camelia trees, the same kind of tree mentioned in the legend. There are several kinds of tea: Green Tea, Black Tea, and Oolong tea. All these three kinds came from Camelia trees, just prepared in different ways. Green tea leaves did not go through fermentation. The leaves were just withered and then steamed. On the other hand, Black and Oolong tea leaves undergo fermentation before being steamed. But researchers say that no matter which process the tea went through, it still contains high levels of polyphenol. Polyphenol is a kind of antioxidant and is the same kind found in most fruits and vegetables. According to some research, tea contains up to 10 times more polyphenol than fruits and vegetables.

Another benefit of drinking tea is that it increases your body’s metabolism. If you are on a diet and you want to lose weight, ask for tea’s help. A research conducted in Switzerland reports that tea-drinkers’ metabolism rises up to 4% in 24 hours if they consume 3 or 4 cups of tea. If the metabolism is faster, our body also burns fat faster. Doing the math, if you regularly drink tea, along with proper exercise, you would be losing 7 pounds a year, or that’s 70 pounds in 10 years. So if I start drinking tea today, in less than 20 years I’ll be weightless. (You just did the math didn’t you?)

Tea also protects your bones and gives you a picture perfect smile. Some drink milk teas, or naicha. Naicha itself contains milk that strengthens your bones and teeth but tea contains fluoride and tannins for an extra plague fighting boost. Tea really is very beneficial.
