The Benefits of Honey on Your Skin

Honey has been used for thousands of years. It offers your body so many benefits. Just take a look at this article on the healing power of manuka honey. When it comes to your skin, honey can aid all skin types. It is able to target acne, age spots, wrinkles, dry skin, and oily skin.

Honey Masks for Acne

If you suffer from acne, you know that it can be tough to find treatments that work for you. Acne can be painful, and some ‘treatments’ tend to make things worse. There are harsh chemicals in many products that will actually dry out your skin, and make your situation more uncomfortable by stimulating excessive oil production.

Honey helps to eliminate bacteria, while targeting redness and swelling. A honey mask will help to reduce not only the appearance of acne, but decrease the level of discomfort. Honey has wonderful antibacterial properties, which target the bacteria that causes acne breakouts. If you are already suffering from a breakout, the anti-inflammatory properties of honey will reduce the level of swelling and redness.

For an acne honey treatment take 1 teaspoon of raw honey and add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. Cinnamon is a great addition to your honey mask to treat acne. With it’s skin lightening properties, it helps to reduce scars from acne. As well, it will target current redness and swelling. Honey will work as an anti-septic; preventing bacteria from growing and spreading.

Get Rid of Sun Spots with Honey

Expensive creams that target age spots contain glycolic acids (the ingredient that targets these discolored areas). Honey contains natural glycolic acids, while many products contain synthesized glycolic acids. Honey is also a natural bleaching agent. It will help to balance out areas of contrasting pigment. Age spots take years to develop, so be patient while treating them. Apply honey every other day, being conscious of consistently.

To treat sun spots take 2 teaspoons of raw honey + 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Lemon juice is great for age spots and even scars. Let sit for 25 minutes before rinsing.

Honey Moisture: Eliminate Dry Skin

If you suffer from dry skin (seasonal, or even chronic), you know that it can be tough to find treatments that benefit your skin and health. When it comes to dry skin, there are a multitude of creams available. Unfortunately, many of these creams contain a number of chemicals. As well, many creams can cost you a great deal of money. Honey is a natural humectant, holding moisture within your skin. Since honey is an anti-irritant, individuals who also suffer from sensitive skin can use this natural solution. With vitamins C, B1, B3, and B6; honey will yield healthy, hydrated skin.

Preventing Oiliness with Honey

A shiny complexion can be brought on by a number of causes. Oiliness will commonly be brought on by hormonal changes or high levels of stress. Honey is highly moisturizing but is also great at absorbing excess moisture that may cause breakouts or infection (due to high levels of oil on the skin and throughout one’s pores). Honey has hygroscopic properties, meaning it will absorb moisture from the air and surrounding environment. This keeps the skin healthy looking, and prevents it from drying out.

Honey for Wrinkles

Honey contains vitamin B2 and zinc; both fight against free radicals. By slowing down free radicals, you are able to slow down the aging process. High levels of anti-oxidants work with your skin to decrease the signs of aging. Honey will begin to make your skin more elastic. Wrinkles that are located on the uppermost level of you skin, can be reversed and you might even see improvement on deeper wrinkles. With the vast amount of moisturizing properties that honey offers, your skin will feel replenished.

Application of Honey Face Mask

  • If a honey face mask is the only cleanser you are using, you can apply once in the morning and once at night. If you are only planning on applying a honey face mask once a day, aim to use it at night. That way, you can wash away all the impurities that your face collected during the day. This will also allow your skin to breathe and moisturize overnight without any makeup on.
  • Wet your face before applying the mask. This will allow you to apply the mask with ease. If your skin is dry, the honey mask will not spread as easily. As well, it’s a great idea to steam your face first to open up pores.
  • After you have applied your mask for 15-25 minutes, wash your face thoroughly with cold water. This will close your pores back up, preventing dirt and oil to block them. You may even dab an ice cube on your skin for a couple minutes.
  • Once your face is completely washed, apply some of your favorite lotion. If it is day time, end your routine with sunscreen.

FAQ on Using Honey as a Mask

What type of honey should I use?

Raw, organic honey trumps all. We recommend T.S. organics or Wedderspoon Premium Manuka.

Can I use the honey in my pantry?

Your standard honey in a bear jar will not bring you the beneficial magic you’re aiming for. Raw honey is in it’s most natural form, yielding the highest level of vitamins and nutrients. Organic honey will eliminate the use of chemicals within the production process.

Is there anything else I need to do besides the mask?

Give your skin the best chance possible. Although a honey mask will do wonders, you need to focus on all aspects of your lifestyle. Are you eating a nutrient-rich diet? Are you drinking enough water? Protecting your skin from UV rays? Help your skin be the best it can be.

How long do I have to use honey masks to see benefits?

Be consistent with your honey mask routine. You need to stay on top of consistent application. Applying a honey mask twice will simply not do. Be consistent, making a habit out of your honey mask regime. You will need to apply a honey face mask for approximately four weeks before seeing noticeable results. This is important, you do not want to stop after a week because you think it’s not beneficial.

Extra Honey Mask Recipes

We shared a couple of our recipes above but here are three more of our favorite honey mask recipes.

Honey Avocado Mask

1 teaspoon of raw honey + 1 teaspoon of mashed avocado. When you’re having a nice snack of avocado, spoon out 1 teaspoon and mix it well with your raw honey. Rub it on your face and let it hang out for around 25 minutes. The healthy fats in the avocado will increase all the benefits that honey has to offer.

Honey Aloe Vera Mask

2 teaspoons of raw honey + 1 teaspoon of aloe vera. This will be great after sun exposure, or if your skin is highly irritated. Aloe is great for soothing skin, while the honey will boost
moisture and provide nutrients. You can leave this mask on for 25 minutes, but 15 minutes will do the trick.

Honey Milk Mask

½ tablespoon of honey + ½ teaspoon of milk. The milk will help clear dead skin cells, allowing the honey to penetrate. Once again, aim for organic milk.
