Apple Cider Vinegar and Coconut Oil for Dandruff

Apple Cider VinegarDandruff sucks but so do the smelly, chemically laced treatments. The good news is that Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with a little Coconut Oil may just be the duo able to help you out. Dandruff is essentially dry scalp and perhaps in some cases caused by fungus. ACV has both anti-fungal properties as well as moisturizing properties without stripping your hair of it’s natural shine. Coconut Oil supports this by acting as a humectant and helping your hair/scalp retain moisture.

How to Use ACV and Coconut Oil to Fight Dandruff

It can be difficult to tell what is causing your dandruff so in general it is best to treat fungus and dryness. Here is the treatment that I found to work the best but you have to follow the steps exactly.

  • Start with a mild moisturizing shampoo.
  • Mix one part ACV and one part coconut oil.
  • Massage into your scalp and work out to your ends.
  • Let it set for 5 minutes! This is the secret. You have to give the ACV enough time to work.
  • Rinse your hair with COLD water! I’m sorry but it has to be cold to close your pores back up.
  • Use a towel to dry your hair but do not leave it on your head. Leaving the towel on your head can create a moist, dark environment and we want air and light to hit your scalp.
  • Stop eating fried foods or other foods that can create skin inflammations.
  • Add anti-inflammatories like fish oil to your diet.
  • Tips for Using ACV and Coconut Oil for Dandruff

    1. You do not want to get ACV in your eyes so use caution.
    2. Do not store your mixture in the shower. Keep it in a cool, dry place.
    3. If you experience stinging you can dilute the mixture with a little water. Also if you experience stinging during use, rinse off the stinging areas with water and avoid those areas until they heal.
    4. If you find that the coconut oil makes your hair too greasy cut back on it or mix ACV with water.
    5. In general, the treatment should be used twice per week to maintain results.

We recommend using an organic coconut oil and Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar. The Bragg ACV is one of the few ACVs that contains “The Mother”. Vinegars that have “The Mother” have extra enzymes and minerals that your hair needs. It also confirms the vinegar was not over-processed.
